Wizard of the Python Ban
The reptile industry and reptile enthusiasts throughout America are under a barrage of legal attacks against our hobby, businesses, and passions.
One of the biggest changes in recent times is the addition of 4 constrictor snakes to the Lacey Act which restricts interstate transportation with severe consequences, destroying businesses and affecting pet owners should they ever have to move to another state. This is of particular concern to our military personnel who can give their lives for their country, but can’t take their beloved pets with them when forced to move from base to base.
Department of the Interior Ken Salazar
…spent 5 years trying to add 9 species of constrictors to the Lacey Act. In the end, he only added 4 saying… “the decision was intended to “strike a balance” between economic and environmental concerns.
U.S. Representative Tom Rooney
….called the recent addition of 4 species a half-measure that “will not do nearly enough to protect the Everglades and the surrounding ecosystems.”
He was also quoted saying “There are nine species of invasive predators that pose a severe threat to our native wildlife,” “and all nine need to be eradicated.” Despite all the effort, officials said it will not solve the snake problem in the Everglades and that they still have to look at improved management and removal to better protect the habitat.
HSUS CEO Wayne Pacelle
…has spearhead most of the anti-pet ownership legislation being proposed in this country without any regard for the caring owners or the final disposition of the animals left in the wake of new regulations.
These individuals, behind these implausible measures, remind me of certain friends of Dorothy, shall we say. It doesn’t take a wizard to see that they are missing courage, brains, and heart.
Mr. Salazaar… You lacked the courage to fully endorse your original rule to add 9 constrictor snakes to the Lacey Act, so in a move of cowardice, you deceitfully backed off to only 4 species in order to avoid congressional oversight that could have, and should have, shot down all your revisions.
Mr. Rooney…You are now trying to take up where Salazar left off and trying to push the addition of the original 9 snakes to the Lacey Act even though there isn’t one shred of evidence that this will have any positive effect on this country.
You obviously lack the brains to see that by introducing such an atrocious and capricious piece of garbage you call legislation, you would not be helping the Everglades, Florida or any environment in the United States. This will only do harm by criminalizing tens of thousands of individuals and destroying businesses during already economically hard times and could even force people to take actions contrary to what you are allegedly trying to prevent by forcing them into impossible situations.
And finally there is Mr. Pacelle who obviously lacks any heart to care about any living creature, besides yourself. By lobbying, financially contributing, and relentlessly pushing for combinations of restrictive ordinances on both state and federal levels, you are effectively attempting to eradicate ownership and leaving no options besides mass euthanasia of perfectly healthy and happy animals all the while breaking the hearts of thousands of loving owners.
But of course, regardless of win or lose, you get to sit back and smirk while collecting your quarter of a million dollar annual salary (just in case anyone was wondering where the donation money really goes).
And to all my friends and supporters out there in OZ, please keep sharing your knowledge and passion in hopes that someday we will no longer have to deal with such ignorance and intolerance.
